Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is Chiropractic?

  • Chiropractic care is the science of locating spinal misalignments, reducing their impact to the nervous system through gentle adjustments, thus allowing the body to function at it’s inborn optimum potential without the use of drugs or surgery.

2. What is Subluxation?

  • Subluxation is a term used in the chiropractic field to describe what happens when a misalignment of the vertebrae occurs in the spinal column.  Chiropractors believe this to be one of the main causes of pain and eventually disease and can be caused by car accidents, falls, incorrect lifting, stress, lack of exercise, improper sleeping position, poor posture, etc. Through the use of manual detection and adjustments, chiropractors are able to relieve pressure and irritation on the nerves, restore joint mobility, and help return the body to normal function.

3. Do adjustments hurt?

  • Adjustments are ordinarily painless. Occasionally, depending on the type of muscle spasm, soreness, and restriction, a patient may temporarily experience tenderness following adjustment. Every person responds to chiropractic adjustments in different ways; however, most patients report a feeling of relief, calmness, improved mobility, and a sense of well being after their adjustments.

4. Are adjustments safe?

  • Dozens of research studies have documented the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments. Because of its success in treating back and neck problems and as a result of recent research and changing attitudes, chiropractic has become more accepted and is now considered by many to be a part of mainstream western medicine. In fact, many hospitals now have chiropractors on staff and they are a part of the Medicare/Medicaid systems. Chiropractors are currently being incorporated into the U.S. military health system. Chiropractors are also recognized by the court system as expert witnesses in their field.

5. Can I adjust myself?

  • No. This is dangerous. This question is frequently asked because people associate the "cracking" or "popping" of one's back or neck with a chiropractic adjustment. The two are not the same thing. If a person has a desire to "crack" his/her neck or back it is often because one area of their spine is fixated or jammed causing another area to move too much and "pop", sometimes by it’s self. When you "crack" your back you may be relieving the tension temporarily, but do you notice how it keeps coming back? That is because you are not giving yourself a specific chiropractic adjustment. The cause of the spinal tension, the fixated or jammed vertebrae, has not been corrected. Even a chiropractor cannot adjust him/herself.

6. What is the “popping" noise I hear during adjustments?

  • When your vertebrae are adjusted, tiny pockets of gas are released from the joints, making a "popping" noise. It's the same sound you hear when you pop your knuckles. Not all chiropractic adjustment techniques produce this noise. In fact, some adjusting techniques use little force and thus produce no noise at all. It's not a sign that the adjustment is working or not working.

7. Once you see a Chiropractor, must you continue forever?

  • No. The extent to which you choose to benefit from your chiropractic care is always up to you. Each and every one of us is solely responsible for the quality of our health and well-being. That being said, we do recommend all patients to consider lifetime, wellness chiropractic care. Through this, you will help to prevent spinal degeneration and promote long-term, lasting benefits to enjoy.

8. What is a Holistic Chiropractor?

  • Holistic chiropractic care is an advanced form of treatment combining traditional chiropractic care with a holistic approach towards the understanding of human design.  These doctors are referred to as CAM, Complimentary Alternative Medical providers.  A Holistic Chiropractic Doctor’s approach is to look at the entire body as a whole rather than a specific part containing the symptoms.  This includes an in depth look at your body’s structural, nutritional and lifestyle factors in order to bring the body, through a non-invasive approach, back into balance and allow it to heal naturally.
